Dunedin Holiday Activities
Cumberland Motel is only a 5-minute drive to Dunedin city centre where there are numerous cafes, bars and restaurants to enjoy. The Meridian mall is an excellent place for clothes shopping and and it is just a short drive from our motel.
We are only a short drive from the historic Railway Station, Dunedin Hospital, Otago University, Cadbury’s chocolate factory, Speights Brewery Tour and the proposed new covered rugby stadium. Carisbrook and Edgar Sports Stadium are also handy for the sports minded.
The Otago Peninsula is only a 45-minute drive from Cumberland and here you will find large albatross birds, penguins and wildlife. It's an amazing spot to explore and the wildlife is very unique. Larnach Castle is also a place worth visiting - it is New Zealand's only castle. Dunedin Airport is approximately 35-minutes from Cumberland Motel and Baldwin Street, the worlds steepest street is a short walk up the road.
Larnach Castle
With its exciting, sometimes scandalous and tragic history, magnificent carved ceilings, New Zealand antiques and breathtaking views, Larnach Castle offers you a vision of the past and present. It is New Zealand's only castle, built in 1871.
Royal Albatross Colony
The Royal Albatross Colony at Taiaroa Head is the only mainland breeding colony for any albatross species found in the southern hemisphere. It is an established colony with a population of around 140 birds and tours are offered all year round.
Dunedin Railway Station
Of all New Zealand cities, Dunedin can boast the largest concentration of Victorian and Edwardian buildings. The old railway station is worth visiting and the scenic Taieri Gorge train trip is a fantastic journey too.
Dunedin Botanic Gardens
Established in 1863, Dunedin Botanic Garden is the oldest in New Zealand. The Botanic Garden offers a range of different native bird species and specialised plant collections.
